Remember Riel

Mayor Roy Avis joined Sunset Country Métis members for the raising of the MNO flag in honour of “Louis Riel Week” yesterday outside the Civic Centre. During the flag-raising, the group heard about Riel and his efforts to preserve Métis rights and culture. It was followed by a lunch of wild rice soup and bannock at the Métis Hall here.

Mass start

Those participating in the inaugural “Dash 4 Diabetes” on Saturday set out on the 5K walk/run over the Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club’s trails at Rocky Inlet. About 100 people attended the event, which also included a 1K run, lunch, and a presentation by local youth with diabetes.

Fr. Victor De Gagné, left, and Deacon Bob Grynol were among the several hundred people who attended the C.W.L.’s Christmas tea and bazaar yesterday afternoon at St. Mary’s Church. There were handmade crafts and baked goods, as well as special draws, a silent auction, jewellery/sewing tables, and a kiddie corner.

‘Shine the Light’

Members of the rehab centre at La Verendrye Hospital, including Nicole Bolen, left, Heidi Loney, Glenna Moran, Deirdre O’Sullivan-Drumbolis, Claire Sobkowicz, and Shawn Holditch, decorated their area and wore purple today in support of the “Shine the Light” campaign organized locally by Riverside Community Counselling Services.

Girls’ night

Avery Sivonen took advantage of the later store hours downtown during “Girls’ Night Out” last night to look at the many Christmas items available at Northwoods Gallery & Gifts. A number of Scott Street businesses participated in the promotion, with stores staying open until 8 p.m. and offering tax-free sales, as well as other discounts and deals, giveaways, and draws.

Nifty backhand

Needing a goal to keep their shootout hopes alive, Andrew Willner put this backhander upstairs on Dryden GM Ice Dogs’ goalie Taylor Unruh in the third round of what turned out to be a nine-round shootout won by the Lakers to give them a 7-6 victory and extend their winning streak to eight-straight games.

‘Adopt an Angel’

Aimee McEvoy, left, and Becky McClain, with Kenora-Rainy River Districts Child and Family Services, finished decorating the “Adopt an Angel” tree this morning at The Bargain Shop here. The program aims to help kids from low-income families, as well as foster children, receive presents this Christmas.
