Giving gifts

St. Francis School students showed off the 33 bags of gifts they are donating to the United Native Friendship Centre here for children this Christmas. Students were asked to bring in donations of toys, books, and games—and clearly they answered the call during this season of giving.

Christmas list

Five-year-old Brynna Strain shared her Christmas list with Santa on Sunday during an “Old Fashion Christmas Party” hosted by library staff and the Friends of the Fort Frances Public Library. The event also featured stories, Christmas carols, goodies, and crafts.

Drinking guidelines

Jana Riches, left, and Christy Herr of the Northwestern Health Unit were stationed at the local LCBO yesterday to promote Canada’s low-risk alcohol drinking guidelines. Customers were encouraged to test their knowledge of the guidelines by trying to pour one serving of either pretend beer, wine, or a shot of Tequila. According to the guidelines, “a drink” means 12 oz.

Elder interview

Crew members Keisha DeBungee and Kayla Allan, along with camera operators Dakota and Chandler Medicine, spent this past Saturday getting to know more about the history of local First Nations’ people from elders from their community, such as Genevieve McGinnis, as part of the “Now and Forever” event staged by Rainy River First Nations.

Toe save

Marco Romano was thwarted on this wraparound attempt by Thunder Bay North Stars’ goalie P.D. Melgoza during the first period of the Lakers’ 5-4 shootout win here Saturday night.

Exhibition battle

Muskie Graeme Kitt (9) and Alex Erickson of the Red Lake Falls (Mn.) Eagles were quick on the draw in this first-period face-off during an exhibition game here Friday night that ended in a 2-2 tie. The Muskies next will be in action at a tournament in Thief River Falls (Mn.) beginning Dec. 29.

Making buns

Danielle Bois was busy in the St. Mary’s Church kitchen Saturday rolling cinnamon buns in preparation for a fundraiser held at the parish over the weekend. The St. Mary’s Youth Group made 64 dozen sticky buns, with funds raised going towards a trip to Poland for World Youth Day in 2016.

Tim's video

This scene from the Tim Hortons’ video launched this morning shows local resident enjoys the cozy atmosphere in the local restaurant that was decorated from floor to ceiling in wool this past Saturday. The company transformed the location, as well as areas of town, for the online video, which is an extension of its “Warm Wishes” campaign.

Mill equipment

A crew was spotted hoisting several new commercial boilers onto the roof of the paper machine building yesterday morning. A Resolute spokesperson still was confirming details but it is believed the new equipment has to do with the company’s plan to heat critical parts of the mill through the winter.
