Cowboy tunes

It was a swinging Sunday night as “tour de Fort” welcomed the Bebop Cowboys’ Swing-a-billy Orchestra to the Townshend Theatre stage. With Steve Briggs (on guitar), Howard Willett (harmonica), and five other band members, the group specializes in western swing. Only two more shows are left in the tour de Fort season, with “House of Doc” performing March 27 and Aaron Lines on April 15.

Blessed welcome

Children attending St. John the Baptist Anglican Church here were called forward Sunday morning to help give a blessing as Fr. Wayne Stirling McIntosh was welcomed back and inducted as priest for the local ministry. Presiding over the ceremony was the Right Rev. David Ashdown, Bishop of Keewatin.

So long, tannenbaum

Dan DeGagné, left, and Daryl Eyolfson fed another haul of trees into the wood chipper at Daryl’s Customs Landscapes on Sixth Street West on Saturday afternoon during the Fort Frances Fire Brigade’s annual Christmas tree pick-up. Firefighters reportedly had fewer trees to gather this year as more people switch to artificial ones.

Testing the waters

Ashlee Homer, with a little help from her mom, Cindy, got to test out the water at the Memorial Sports Centre pool yesterday. The “Starfish” program, designed for infants who can lift their own head up to age 18 months, helps introduce children to water while also helping to teach parents about water safety.

Diving in

Participants in the Winter Chill Invitational swim meet dove off the starting blocks during mixed heats of the 200m freestyle event Saturday at the Memorial Sports Centre. See story, results on B3.

Crowded crease

Holmlund Leafs’ goalie Avery Adrian was a busy guy Saturday against another Fort Frances team, the Canadian Tire Sabres, during medal-round play of the local Bantam ‘A’ tournament at the Ice for Kids Arena. Canadian Tire doubled the Leafs 6-3 in the ‘C’ final.

Snow shower

Kyle Herr converted on a centering pass from Matt DePiero during a six-goal first-period outburst in the Muskies’ 10-0 romp over Ely last Tuesday night in exhibition play at the Ice for Kids Arena. The Muskies scored a whopping 35 goals over three exhibition games this past week.
