Mary Pat Jourdain, 114, of the Atikokan General Hospital-Extended Care Wing, 120 Dorothy St., Atikokan, Ont., formerly of Lac La Croix First Nation, Ont., passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, May 4, 2006.
She was born Sept. 21, 1891 in Seine River First Nation, Ont. to the late William and Azwanigotok Sky.
After Mary’s mother died, her grandparents brought her up and taught her the traditional ways of our people. They lived off the land and travelled by birchbark canoe.
Mary credited her long life to her traditional lifestyle. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Jourdain in 1956; two step-sons, Andrew Jourdain Sr. and Angus Jourdain; and three grandchildren, Paul Jourdain, Norman Jourdain, and Isobel Jourdain.
Mary is survived by her grandchildren, Steve Jourdain Sr. and wife, Iris, Lillian and husband, John Boshey Jr., Josephine and husband, Edward Atatise Sr., Nora and partner, James Atatise, Angus Jourdain Sr. and wife, Janice, Leon Jourdain and wife, Elaine, Joan Marie Jourdain, Lawrence Jourdain and partner, Corrine, Gordon Jourdain and partner, Nicole, Andrew Jourdain Jr. and wife, Marietta, and Norma Nastiuk; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A traditional Mide ceremony will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the Round House at Lac La Croix First Nation. Elder Steve Johnson will officiate, with burial in Lac La Croix First Nation Cemetery.
A wake will be held Monday evening, May 8, 2006 at the Round House at Lac La Croix First Nation.
Active and honourary pallbearers will be Mary’s family and friends.
