It is with great sadness that the family of June Ruth Hamalainen (nee Vollans, nee Mack) announce her sudden passing at 78 years, on Wednesday July 24, 2019 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
June was born on June 17, 1941 in Port Arthur, Ont., first child of Lillian and Ronald Vollans.
She spent her first 11 years growing up in Port Arthur, then in 1953 the family moved to Atikokan, Ont.
The next few years had her attending the local schools and eventually helping her parents at Ron's Service.
In 1960, June married Doug Mack. Within the year, they headed west in search of work, eventually settling in Seattle, Wash. June lost Doug to cancer in 1984.
About five years later June married Waino Hamalainen, leaving Seattle and heading back to Atikokan.
In 2009, her final move was to Fort Frances, shortly after Waino's passing.
June was active with the Atikokan Legion, Fort Frances Lions Club and Fort Frances Hospital Auxiliary.
Her favourite past-time was fishing and reading, but when mobility issues arose she amused herself with computer games.
June was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Ronald Vollans; husbands, Doug Mack and Waino Hamalainen; and step-daughter, Jeannie Fiset (nee Hamalainen).
She will be fondly remembered by brothers, Dennis (Patricia Everett) Vollans and Blair (Birgit) Vollans; nieces, Denise (Rick) Kadolph, Cherie Lynn Vollans, and Sandy (Corey) Anderson; nephews, Dennis LaBelle and Jeffery Vollans; half-siblings Fay (George) Tergie, Bonnie Arnosti and Jerry Rybak; and extended family and dear friends, especially Dorothy Bruyere.
There will be no funeral at June's request.
Cremation has taken place with June's ashes joining those of Waino in their favourite fishing spot in the Atikokan area.
In memory of June, donations can be made to Atikokan General Hospital or La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances.
Forever in our hearts
