Gregory Asplund, 56, of R.R. #1, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008.

Greg was born May 17, 1952 in Fort Frances to Olga and Mel Asplund.

Greg’s passion for golf came early as he was fortunate to have a golf course across the road from his childhood home. He was an avid golfer who won many championships and travelled widely to play on courses all over the United States and Scotland.

Greg graduated with a pharmacy degree from North Dakota State University in 1976. He spent many years working side-by-side with his father, Mel, at Emo Drugs. Greg owned and operated Emo Drugs, where he served the Rainy River District for more than 30 years.

He took great pride in his vocation, and thought of many of his patients and colleagues as friends.

On Sept. 16, 1978, Greg married Janet Pochailo of Fort Frances. The couple settled in Fort Frances, where they had their children, Lauren and James.

Greg spent many winter evenings at the Fort Frances Curling Club. He also spent a lot of time at the local hockey rinks and on the road, supporting and watching his son, James, play hockey. Greg never missed a game.

Greg enjoyed spending time at his beautiful lake home on Clearwater Lake that he built for his family. Many summers were spent there with family and friends, fishing, water-skiing, and swimming.

He also loved trout fishing on the Pipestone chain of lakes and bass fishing in many local fishing tournaments. Most memorable to him was finishing in the top 10 at the Kenora Bass International in 2004.

Greg is survived by his son, James (Kristyn). Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Fern Pochailo; sisters-in-law, Linda (Jim) MacDonald and Barbara Kircher; brother-in-law, Jim (Lori) Pochailo; and his nieces and nephews, and many loyal friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Janet Asplund, on Nov. 11, 1996; his daughter, Lauren Asplund, on Sept. 2, 1997; his mother, Olga (Badiuk) Asplund, on Jan. 5, 1990; his father, Mel Asplund, on Nov. 22, 2003; and his father-in-law, Frank Pochailo, on Aug. 19, 1987.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008 at 3 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont., with Pastor Peggy Mason officiating.

Interment will take place at a later date.

The honorary pallbearers will be Ian McLennan, Don DeBenedet, Rob Badiuk, Dave Green, Mike McKinnon, and Jane Allan.
