The Muskie golf team took three competitors to the opening tournament of the NorWOSSA season in Atikokan last week—and despite the low turnout, those who did make the trip had strong showings.
Alex McDonald shot an 80 to finish fifth overall while Kevin Jackson carded an 85.
Riel Councillor also made his first appearance for the team, but they didn’t qualify for team points due to some last-minute cancellations.
“It’s tough at this time of year because you don’t have much time with the start-up of school and all the other sports programs going on at the same time,” Fort High athletic director Shane Bliss said.
“It looked like we were going down with a team of six or seven and the next thing you know we had three try out for other sports,” he added. “We lost a couple boys to volleyball, one to football, but you can’t do much about that.”
Golf became strictly a fall school sport to coincide with OFSAA, so the season is really condensed before the weather turns.
The Muskie squad next plays in Red Lake this week before hosting a tournament the following week at Heron Landing.
The top three teams, and five best individual scores, from the NorWOSSA season will advance to the NWOSSAA finals in Thunder Bay.
