MNR blitz nets charges

A two-day enforcement blitz by Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers on a lake near Atikokan found many individuals to be in violation of a variety of fishing and boating regulations.

On July 29-30, conservation officers checked 125 individuals on Basswood Lake, located on the Canada/U.S. border south of Atikokan.

Fourteen charges and 78 warnings were issued under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, the Ontario Fishery Regulations, and the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act.

Charges included:

•entering a park other than at a designated entry;

•fishing without a licence;

•operating a power boat in Quetico Provincial Park; and

•angling with barbed hooks.

Warnings included:

•operating a power boat in Quetico Provincial Park;

•fishing without a licence;

•angling with barbed hooks

•not having a park permit;

•fishing with live bait in Quetico Provincial Park;

•importing live bait into Ontario;

•possessing fish of a prohibited length; and

•angling with more than one line.

Conservation officers occasionally use enforcement blitzes, and border point or roadside check stations, to enforce fish and wildlife regulations.
