Jr. Sabres to seek town’s support

Representatives from the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres hockey team are scheduled to ask for support on several issues at tonight’s town council meeting.

In a letter from team president Carolyn Kellaway, she noted the team wants a break on ice rental fees, as the town is charging them non-resident fees to use the Ice for Kids Arena.

According to her, this is contrary to initial ice rental contract talks when they were quoted the resident ice rental fee.

The Jr. Sabres also are asking council to place signage at both ends of town welcoming the Sabres “to their new home.”

“While we recognize the town is not a ‘Welcome Wagon,’ we do absolutely see the need for such a goodwill gesture on the part of the town,” Kellaway and vice-president Nancy Gardiman noted in a separate letter to council.

“Fort Frances is clearly a hockey town, and such an embracing move will go a long way in helping the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres extend and consolidate their feelings of ambassadorship in and towards the community and district at large,” they wrote.

The pair also suggested that since the Jr. Sabres will boost sales at Carol’s Canteen, perhaps a portion of those profits could come back to the Jr. Sabres to help offset operating costs like equipment, travel, and advertising.

“Mayor and council have an opportunity to work with the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres and make it into the best SIJHL franchise,” the letter reads.

“In partnership, the Sabres and the town can benefit economically, and together mould a team of sports advocates and team community leaders at the inclusion and co-operation of each other,” it adds.

Tonight’s council meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but be in-camera until about 6:10.

Other business at tonight’s meeting will include:

•a presentation by Hugh Dennis, co-ordinator of the Rainy River District Substance Abuse Prevention Team;

•a request to reconsider the business licensing bylaw from Brad Norris;

•a request from the Township of Alberton regarding its gateway sign;

•a financial request from the Ontario 911 Advisory Board;
