Cooper Witherspoon and Graeme Kitt each scored twice as the Muskies boys’ hockey team opened defence of its title at the Victoria Inn tournament in Brandon, Man. yesterday with a 8-2 romp over the Sanford Collegiate Sabres.
Fort High zipped out to a 7-0 lead, with Witherspoon and Kitt scoring 16 seconds apart against Sabres’ goalie Derek Keddie in the first period to get the ball rolling.
Matt Cheetham added another before the period was over.
Witherspoon (short-handed), Chase McGuire (power-play), and Kitt again made it 6-0 in the second period before Nick Hahkala added a second short-handed tally early in the third.
The Sabres finally solved Muskie goalie Dylan Ossachuk, making his first start in five games, with a pair of goal just 1:15 apart later in the period.
Jon Busch iced the win with a goal with under two minutes to go.
Fort High clashed with the John Taylor Pipers (Winnipeg) earlier today in its second and final game in Pool ‘B’ before the 24 teams are shuffled into three eight-team brackets.
The Muskies next will play tomorrow at 10 a.m. if they lose today’s game or at noon if they beat the Pipers.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls’ hockey squad is off to Thunder Bay to play three exhibition games.
The action starts tonight against the Confederation College Thunderhawks, who feature former Muskie forwards Amy Penner and Kaily Greengrass.
The Muskies then will face the Thunder Bay Midget ‘A’ Queens tomorrow before playing the Thunder Bay Fury Midget on Sunday.
