Changing some of their roster didn’t change the outcome for the Muskie girls’ hockey team
Third-period goals by Emma Noga and Taylor Croswell were the difference as the Muskies successfully defended their title at the Sturgeon Heights Huskies tournament with a 4-2 win over the Kelvin Clippers yesterday in Winnipeg.
Rachel Jean and Annalise Hayes also tallied for Fort High, which captured the pre-season tourney for the second-straight year.
Sydney Beck, who carried the load between the pipes the entire weekend for the Fort, picked up the win in goal in the decisive contest.
The Muskies fell 2-1 in their opening game to the Vincent Massey Trojans, with rookie Siobhan Mackintosh getting her first-ever high school goal.
But the black-and-gold then ripped off a four-game winning streak to claim the crown.
First they beat the Clippers 6-4 in a preview of the final on goals by Croswell, Jenna Clendenning, Rylee Redford, Hayes, Avery Cates, and Janelle Kaemingh.
Fort High then blanked the Springfield Sabres 6-0 before downing the Oak Park Raiders 5-1 in the semi-finals.
Tallying for the Muskies were Lauren Vold, Clendenning, Kelsey Langtry, Moriah Carradice, Kaemingh and Sam McKinnon.
Beck made seven saves to record her first shutout as a Muskie.
The Muskies next will host the Scott Clendenning Memorial Showcase, named in honour of the team’s former head coach who passed away in March, this weekend at the Ice For Kids Arena.
The five-team event originally was slated to be a tournament before being switched to a “showcase” theme.
All the teams will take part in four round-robin games, with no championship final planned.
Fort High’s first game will be Friday at 7:15 p.m. against the Thunder Bay Midget ‘AAA’ Queens.
Then they’ll get their first look at a pair of NorWOSSA rivals on Saturday in the Kenora Broncos (9:15 a.m.) and Dryden Eagles (3:15 p.m.)
The Muskies will close out play Sunday at 10:15 a.m. against fellow NorWOSSA foe in the Sioux Lookout Warriors.
