Muskie soccer squads finish first

The Muskie girls’ soccer team was unable to come away with a win on the rain-soaked final day of the regular season but still clinched a first-place bye to next Wednesday’s (May 29) NorWOSSA final in Dryden.
Fort High dropped both of its matches against the host Kenora Broncos and Dryden Eagles to finish with a 2-2-2 record, but the Broncos and Eagles battled to a draw in their final match of the season against each other–thus leaving Dryden one point back of the Muskies with seven.
The Muskies opened play yesterday morning with a 3-1 loss to the Broncos.
Pasquel Shortreed tallied the squad’s lone goal.
Then they ended the regular season with a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the Eagles.
Second-place Dryden (1-1-4) will square off against third-place Kenora (1-1-4) for the right to advance to face the Muskies in next week’s final.
OFSAA then is slated for June 6-8 in Belle River.
As for the Muskie boys, they capped an undefeated regular season yesterday with a win and a draw to solidify their first-place standing, which was clinched last week in Dryden.
The Muskies (5-0-1) opened play yesterday morning with a 2-0 shutout of the host Broncos.
Nick Hahkala and Ethan Carlson-Jourdain both found the back of the net in that one.
The squad then capped the regular season with a 2-2 draw against the Eagles.
Austin Armstrong and Brett Allan bulged the twine in that one.
Second-place Dryden (2-3-1) and third-place Kenora (2-4) will battle each other in next Wednesday’s semi-final to earn the right to advance to face the Muskies in the league final.
Fort High will be seeking a ninth-straight NorWOSSA crown and a berth to the all-Ontarios slated for June 6-8 in North Bay.
