If Nick Minerva keeps this up, he’s going to need a bigger trophy case—possibly one large enough to hold a defenceman-of-the-year award and perhaps even a league MVP.
The Fort Frances Lakers’ defenceman cemented his spot as one of the SIJHL’s elite performers of late with his selection yesterday as the Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions Corp. player-of-the-week.
Minerva has not let up since being named the Gongshow Gear Inc. performer-of-the-month for November.
He racked up eight assists in two Lakers’ wins last week, which kept the team at No. 6 in the CJHL’s weekly top 20 rankings.
The 19-year-old from New Brunswick, N.J. nearly matched his award-winning total of 11 points last month in just one week.
He had three assists in a 5-3 triumph over the Minnesota Iron Rangers, then a career-best five more in a 7-1 dumping of the English River Miners.
Minerva now leads all SIJHL blueliners with 28 points in 20 games this season—putting him fifth overall in league scoring.
The Pentiction Vees (BCHL) held on to the top CJHL ranking this week.
The Lakers take to the road once more tomorrow to face the second-place Dryden GM Ice Dogs before hosting Minnesota in their next home game this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
