The fortunes of both Pierce Dushenko and his team definitely are trending upward.
Thanks to backstopping the Fort Frances Lakers to a pair of wins last week, Dushenko yesterday was named the Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions player-of-the-week in the SIJHL.
The 20-year-old goalie from Coquitlam, B.C. turned aside 53-of-55 shots in a 3-2 win over the host English River Miners last Tuesday and a 3-0 shutout of the Thunder Bay North Stars here Saturday.
Dushenko (6-1) leads the SIJHL in wins and shutouts (two) while sitting second in GAA (2.35) and third in save percentage (.920).
Meanwhile, the two wins lifted the Lakers up the CJHL’s top 20 weekly rankings—rising from “honourable mention” status last week to No. 13.
The Lakers (9-2) currently lead the SIJHL by one point over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (8-2-1), who received an “honourable mention” in this week’s rankings.
Fort Frances hosts the third-place Minnesota Iron Rangers (6-7-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
The home side will be short at least three regulars, including two on the back end.
Defenceman Brandon Zajicek is out at least two weeks with an ankle injury while fellow blueliner Nick Minerva (unspecified) will be away from the team until later this week.
Forward Colton Spicer (ankle) remains sidelined indefinitely.
Dylan Kooner missed Saturday’s game against Thunder Bay with an illness and is questionable for tonight, as is back-up goalie Brandon Bodnar (lower-body injury).
