Confederation College recognizes athletic achievements

THUNDER BAY- The Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI) delivered a live online version of its annual Thunderhawks Athletic Awards Monday. This format offered an important venue to recognize the accomplishments of local and regional athletes and coaches.

Thunderhawks Women’s Curling Skip, Faith Hebert, was crowned this year’s Female Athlete of the Year. Thunder Bay’s Hebert is graduating from the Early Childhood Education program. Hebert has demonstrated her true athletic spirit, enthusiasm and dedication for athletics with her commitment to the Thunderhawks Curling program for two years. She has also received the Women’s Curling Team MVP award for the past two years. Coach Larry Rathje celebrated Hebert with the following remarks. “I have had the fortune of coaching Faith for five years,” he said. “She has always been a fierce competitor, yet always extremely respectful of competitors, teammates, officials and coaches.”

Thunderhawks Men’s Indoor Soccer player, Dante Lagrange, is the recipient of this year’s Male Athlete of the Year award. Lagrange is a Thunder Bay athlete, graduating from Computer Programming. “Dante has shown what it means to be a Thunderhawk,” said Assistant Coach, Marco Chiappetta. “He has proven to be a solid defensive player and has shown his versatility in being able to play anywhere he is tasked to play.”

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s All-Academic Awards are given to students who achieve honour roll status in the semester of their sport and were presented to Matthew Cho-Chu, Dominique Gardner and Joshua Kitt.

Mitchell Ringos, graduating from the Digital Media Production program (and an alumnus of the Police Foundations program) was chosen as this year’s D.A.R. Bradshaw Athletic Achievement Award recipient. This award is presented to a graduating student, demonstrating the most improvement in and contribution to athletics, and whose quality of spirit and competitive drive contributed to the overall success of the College athletic program. Ringos has been a member of the Thunderhawk’s Men’s Indoor Soccer team for the past three years, has received the 2017-18 Male Athlete of the Year and 2017-18 Rookie of the Year awards, and has been team co-captain for the past two years.

Appreciation was also presented to Tbaytel for its ongoing, generous sponsorship of the Thunderhawks Athletics program.
