Bantams take silver in Kenora

The Kenora Thistles once again were a thorn in the side of the Fort Frances Bantam ‘AA’ Canadians.

Jacob Frankcom netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner four minutes into the third period, to lead the host Thistles to a 3-1 win over the Canadians in the final of the ‘AA’ Bantam Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Brady Bodnarchuk netted the Canadians’ lone goal.

Fort Frances was looking for revenge after the Thistles had eliminated the Canadians from their own tournament back on Nov. 21 with a 3-2 overtime victory in the quarter-finals.

The Canadians had opened play with a 4-2 win over Dryden 4-2, then added identical 3-1 wins against Central Plains and the NorWest Stars.

Meanwhile, the Fort Frances Atom ‘AA’ Canadians had more ups than downs in a trio of exhibition games over the weekend.

They dropped the opener of a doubleheader with the Atikokan PeeWee ‘B’ Voyageurs by a 5-3 margin.

Noah McPherson tallied twice for the Canadians while Teagan Wrolstad got the other goal.

Brayton Levesque took the loss in net.

Fort Frances then came away with an 8-5 victory in the rematch.

McPherson led the way with a hat trick while Landon Lowes added a pair of goals.

Singles went to Evan Kabel, Emerson Evans, and Wrolstad, with Kade Oster earning the win between the pipes.

The Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association next will host its annual Atom ‘A’ tournament this weekend.

Games begin tomorrow, with the playoffs taking place Sunday.
