UNFC Orange Shirt Day

Ken Kellar

United Native Friendship Centre Aboriginal healing and wellness worker Deb Emes read from the book, “The Orange Shirt Story,” by Phyllis Webstad during the UNFC’s Orange Shirt Day ceremony yesterday. Webstad’s book is a recounting of her time in a residential school in British Columbia and the origins of orange shirt days in Canada, created to honour and remember the children who were forced through the residential school system. The UNFC held a drum circle and lunch in order to commemorate the annual event, with some residential school survivors volunteering to share their stories.
