Bridging cultures

Photo Album:

Andrea Avis, program director at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre, showed off just a couple of the many library books that have been marked with the FNMI (First Nations/Métis/Inuit) abbreviation and the four-coloured medicine wheel symbol to indicate they were written by an FNMI author, pertain to aboriginal subject matter, or, in some cases, translated into Ojibwe. The books range from children’s stories to adult fiction. In addition to being able to easily spot the medicine wheel on the spines of books, patrons can do a keyword search for “FNMI” in the library’s catalogue to find titles. The tagging system is an ongoing project, with more titles added all the time.
