Single-use plastics ban to be considered

Category:

Coun. Douglas Judson is proposing a draft bylaw that places a ban on single use plastics by Jan. 2021 at tonight's regular council meeting.

The draft bylaw prohibits businesses from distributing plastic checkout bags, food containers made of foam, plastic straws, and stir sticks.

Large retailers would be required to provide reusable bags at their stores for customers, under the bylaw.

Garbage bags and similar products would continue to be available, the bylaw is only concerned with certain plastic products distributed at the point of sale to transport goods or hold prepared food.

Also at tonight's meeting, council will receive a report regarding a letter that requests a sidewalk be built along Keating Avenue which will be referred to the 2020 capital budget process.

The budget process has begun and it is anticipated that the budget will be passed on March 23, 2020.
