ETFO supporting province

Toronto, ON - The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) understands the need for a plan and process for continuous learning for students in Ontario's public education system during the temporary situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The ongoing well-being and success of students and that of our public education system is paramount," said ETFO President Sam Hammond. "Learning is best face-to-face in a classroom setting. That being said, we are working with the government and school boards to seek effective ways that ensure our educators can deliver the resources and supports that students need until the pandemic abates and we can return to classrooms.”

ETFO is part of a formal working group made up of representatives from education unions and the Ministry of Education working collaboratively to prepare for continuous learning. We have reminded the Ministry that many students have unique and specialized needs and that some have challenging circumstances affecting their ability to engage in learning outside the classroom. It is extremely important that during this temporary situation, we strive to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for students to advance learning."

“ETFO members have the expertise, passion, commitment and flexibility to respond to this public health emergency. They are the professionals with the knowledge and skills that students need to learn.”

“It is the commitment of educators that has helped make Ontario's public education system one of the best in the world", added Hammond. "During this period of uncertainty, we are working with education stakeholders to implement temporary solutions to ensure our public education system remains strong, effective and a model for other jurisdictions.”
