Good omen or bad?

Not everyone is enjoying the unseasonably mild weather these days, with many district farmers wondering if this early thaw is the harbinger of another dry year.

Kim Jo Calder, manager at the Emo Research Station, said all the snow has melted in the fields although there has been very little run off from the thaw.

4-H hand out awards

Laura Zimmerman and Greg Hartlin each walked away with a little cash from the annual banquet of the Rainy River District 4-H Association held Feb. 6 at the Devlin Community Hall.

Zimmerman won the DeGagne Award ($100 and a trophy) as the calf club member who accumulated the greatest number of points during the last three years.

Brown given seniors’ award

Evelyn Brown was honoured as 1997 Senior of the Year for La Vallee in recognition of her dedication to the community.

A very quiet person by nature, but someone who loves people, Brown visits the sick and shut-ins in the hospital or their homes, taking along baking. She also volunteers and donates for the hospital auxiliary.

Kenora district doesn’t vote on health unit audit

The Rainy River District Municipal Association may have to wait before it sees an independent audit on the Northwestern Health Unit because the Kenora District Municipal Association failed to pass a similar resolution at its annual meeting in Dryden.

“That didn’t even come to the floor,” Dryden Mayor Roger Valley, incoming president of the KDMA, said yesterday.
