Five new fires were confirmed by yesterday afternoon in the Northwest Region.
Sioux Lookout Fire #22, located in the far north near Windigo Lake, was listed as “being observed” at 30 hectares in size.
Sioux Lookout Fire #23, burning near Opakopa Lake, 20 km southwest of Weagamow Lake First Nation, was listed as “not under control” at 40 ha at last report.
Nipigon Fire #13, near Turley Lake about 35 km north of Eabametoong First Nation, also was listed as “not under control” at 70 ha.
Nipigon Fire #14, located 17 km southwest of Neskantaga First Nation, was listed as “not under control” at two ha while Dryden Fire #12 was “not under control,” as well, at 0.5 ha.
The forest fire hazard is “high” across most of the region, with an area of “moderate” hazard in the southern portions of the Nipigon and Thunder Bay districts.
Red Lake Fire #38, located southeast of North Spirit Lake, remains active and was 3,802 ha in size at last report.
An Incident Management Team has been assigned to this fire and ignition operations are being used to limit its spread to the north.
Air tankers continue an effort to help bring the fire under control.
There currently are 16 active fires in the region, 11 of which are either “under observation,” “under control,” or “being held.”
