“Exercise Frosty Gunner,” featuring personnel, vehicles, and equipment from the 116 Independent Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery (based in Kenora), will run today through Sunday on the land surrounding the Fort Frances Curling Club. A “focused display” will be held Saturday from 1-2:30 p.m. As well, a recruitment information booth will be set up Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the curling club parking lot.
The Legion Ladies Auxiliary will held its next monthly supper–featuring pork cutlets–Friday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. upstairs at the Legion (doors open at 4:30). Tickets cost $16/person (note the new price) and everyone is welcome, with take-outs available by calling 274-3772. A 50/50 draw also will be held.
The Fort Frances Lakers will host the Thunder Bay North Stars in SIJHL action today (Jan. 26) at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for those 12 and under.
“Paddle into the New Year,” presented by the Sunset Country Métis Council and the Métis Nation of Ontario Healing and Wellness Branch, is set for Saturday, Jan. 27 from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Sunset Country Métis Hall (714 Armit Ave.) The event will include a free meal (including wild rice burgers), prizes throughout the afternoon, activities for both children and adults, and MNO program information.

The SIJHL 2018 Showcase, presented by the Seven Generations Education Institute and Flint House, is coming to Fort Frances on Jan. 30-Jan. 31. Games on the Tuesday will feature Minnesota vs. Dryden (1 p.m.), English River vs. Thief River Falls (4:15 p.m.), and the Lakers vs. Thunder Bay, with Wednesday’s games featuring Thunder Bay vs. English River (1 p.m.), Thief River Falls vs. Minnesota (4:15 p.m.), and the Lakers vs. Dryden (7:30 p.m.) Admission is $25 for a day pass or $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for those 12 and under per game.
An open house and registration night for the Rainy River District Festival of the Performing Arts is slated for Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 6-8 p.m. in the Shaw Room at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre. Come sign up to compete in the festival and have your questions answered. There also will be a bake sale and a draw prize.

The FMG Ice Dragons Challenge, hosted by the International Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Club, will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 from 3-9 p.m. on the ice by La Place Rendez-Vous. The course is 200 metres long and there will be three divisions: men’s, women’s, and mixed. There are 10 people per team (ages 12+) and the registration fee is $500/team.
