The U21 men's and women's provincial playdowns continue at the Fort Frances Curling Club. The final round-robin draw goes today (Dec. 29) at 4 p.m., with the finals slated for Saturday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. unless tie-breakers are needed. If they are, action will get underway at 9 a.m.

A New Year's Eve “Black & White Gala,” a formal attire fundraiser hosted by the Fort Frances Lions Club, will be held Sunday, Dec. 31 at the Copper River Inn. Cocktails are at 6:30 p.m., with a prime rib and crab leg dinner to follow at 7:30. Live dinner music by the Bel Cantro String Quartet, followed by dancing with Party Rock DJ Services. The annual “Polar Plunge,” organized by the Voyageur Lions Club of Fort Frances, once again will be held on New Year's Day on Sand Bay (behind La Place Rendez-Vous). For more info or to get pledge sheets, call Bill Michl at 276-1334.

The Fort Frances Lakers will host the Minnesota Iron Rangers in SIJHL action on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for those 12 and under.

The Valley Adult Learning Association will hold a course on conversational English (listening, speaking, and writing skills) for newcomers to Canada. The 38th-annual “Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard" 5K and 10K races will be held Saturday, Jan. 20 in conjunction with "Icebox Days” festivities in International Falls. Other festival events include the Frostbite Falls Open, frozen turkey bowling, youth and adult smoosh races, a boot hockey tournament, chili challenge, and a winter fireworks display.
