American, British veterans recreate D-Day parachute drops

CARENTAN, France — Parachutists are jumping over Normandy again, just as soldiers did 75 years ago for D-Day ‚Äî but this time without being shot at.

With the throb of their engines rumbling through cloudy skies, C-47 transport planes in World War II colours dropped jumpers with round canopies reminiscent of those used by airborne forces in 1944.

Jimmy Carter awarded tenure at Emory University at age 94

ATLANTA — At age 94, former President Jimmy Carter has finally been granted tenure at Emory University in Atlanta.

Carter earned the distinction after serving as University Distinguished Professor for the past 37 years, the university announced Monday.

He’ll be the first tenured faculty member at Emory to hold a Nobel Prize and the first to have served as U.S. president.

Sherpa guide climbs Everest 24th time, outdoing own record

KATHMANDU, Nepal — A Sherpa mountaineer extended his record for successful climbs of Mount Everest with his 24th ascent of the world’s highest peak on Tuesday.

Kami Rita reached the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) peak Tuesday, which was his second time on the summit in a week. He climbed to the top on May 15 then returned to base camp before climbing again this week.

Sextuplets born in Poland; mother and newborns doing well

WARSAW, Poland — A 29-year-old woman gave birth to six babies in Poland on Monday, in what is believed to be the country’s first-ever case of sextuplets. The mother and newborns are said to be doing well.

The babies, four of whom are girls, were born through cesarean section at University Hospital in Krakow in southern Poland.
