BRAMPTON, Ont.—Police say one person has died and another suffered serious injuries after they were shot in a car yesterday on a highway west of Toronto.
Peel Regional Police Const. Heather Cannon says they received a 911 call at 2:28 a.m. from someone who reported being shot.
Cannon says officers found a vehicle and two people suffering gunshot wounds on Highway 410 in Brampton, Ont, but did not confirm whether or not the victims were in the vehicle.
She said one person was pronounced dead at the scene while another was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police have not released details about the victims.
Cannon says a short time later, Peel police officers had an “interaction” with a separate vehicle, which is now being investigated by the province's police watchdog.
Monica Hudon of the Special Investigations Unit said their probe centres on an Audi SUV observed near the scene.
Hudon said police surrounded the vehicle, but the Audi reversed and an officer allegedly fired several shots at the SUV.
The Audi was later found abandoned in a residential neighbourhood.
She said it's not known if anyone was injured during the interaction, but added that the SIU is obligated to investigate any situation involving police in which someone may have been killed or injured.
The watchdog also probes all police-involved incidents in which someone is accused of sexual assault.
Cannon said there are multiple crime scenes on the highway, which remained closed yesterday afternoon as police continued their investigation.
