Council bullets


Town council accepted a proposal from Union Gas for a “Helping Hands” project at its regular meeting Monday night.

As previously reported, Union Gas has offered to apply for grants—and offer up manpower—to help repair damaged arena seats at the Memorial Sports Centre.

As well, council:

  • agreed to the recommendation of the Administration and Finance executive committee to approve the adjustment of 2011 taxes for 566 Riverview Dr., 613 Second St. E., 648 Scott St., and 1245 Idylwild Dr.;
  • appointed Peggy Loyie to the Fort Frances Library Technology Centre Library Board for a term ending Nov. 30, 2014;
  • approved a report re: input for the OPP Rainy River District Business Plan;
  • approved the January, 2012 Drinking Water Systems Monthly Summary Report;
  • received a donation request from the Ontario 9-1-1 Advisory Board and directed that no further action be taken;
  • received a request to support the local Alzheimer Society’s charitable “Spring Reflections” event, and directed that no further action be taken;
  • authorized treasurer Laurie Witherspoon to set up a corporate contingency reserve fund and transfer $318,000 to it (this money is the 2010 budget surplus);
  • authorized the submission of a grant application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for $76,300 for remedial repairs to Sunny Cove Camp;
  • agreed to a request from the Canadian Red Cross to proclaim March as “Red Cross Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
  • passed a bylaw to approve a forest fire management agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources; and
  • passed a bylaw to approve an agreement with the Canadian Red Cross Society for Disaster Relief Services.
