Council hears OPP update

While some of the numbers are down from the same period last year, the Fort Frances OPP detachment definitely was busy in the second quarter of 2008, OPP S/Sgt. Steve Shouldice reported to town council Monday night.

In the second quarter, local OPP officers responded to 1,175 calls for service, compared to 1,022 in the second quarter of 2007.

Survey deadline nearing

With the deadline coming up next Monday (Sept. 15), time is running out to participate in the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce’s consumer survey.

Since it was launched Aug. 15, more than 40 surveys have been completed by community members.

Sabres bolster defence corps

The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres have shored up some holes on defence in preparation for their second SIJHL season.

Head coach Wayne Strachan announced the team has acquired defencemen Kenny Carpenter and Darren Ezelyk from the Quesnel Millionaires of the British Columbia Hockey League in exchange for future considerations.

Muskie golfers open season

The Muskie golf team took three competitors to the opening tournament of the NorWOSSA season in Atikokan last week—and despite the low turnout, those who did make the trip had strong showings.

Alex McDonald shot an 80 to finish fifth overall while Kevin Jackson carded an 85.
