Subway closed to day traffic

The Town of Fort Frances is advising the public that the Portage Avenue underpass will be completely shut down from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today thorugh next Tuesday (Sept. 24-30).

Crews were scheduled today to pour concrete for retaining wall footings on the northeast side footing number one and southeast side footings two, four, and six.

Trail walk coming up

The Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club will be holding its annual fall trail walk this Saturday (Sept. 27) at 11 a.m. at the Rocky Inlet ski trails.

They will venture out to enjoy the fall colours and a wiener roast, rain or shine.

Be sure to dress for the weather, and wear sturdy walking shoes.

Minor hockey camps on tap

The Hockey Canada Skills Development Camp for Atom and PeeWee players will take placeå here this Saturday (Sept. 27).

The camp will run from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre, and is limited to the first 72 players to register from the Atom and PeeWee levels.

Underpass closures announced

The Portage Avenue underpass will be closed from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. tomorrow through Tuesday (Sept. 24-30) as rehabilitation work there continues, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown reported this morning.

Brown said crews will be pouring concrete tomorrow, and then will be installing a bottom row of seven soil anchors from Thursday to Tuesday.

Bearcats maul Sabres

The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres opened their second season in the SIJHL with a pair of weekend losses to the visiting Thunder Bay Bearcats.

The Bearcats romped to a 6-3 victory in Friday night’s opener, then pulled out a narrow 3-2 win Saturday night.
