PeeWee ‘A’ tourney being held at arena

The Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association is hosting a PeeWee ‘A’ tournament this weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Four teams from the local house league will host two Emo squads, one from Kenora, and four from Thunder Bay.

“We should be competitive [though] it’s kind of an unknown,” said Milt Strachan, a local PeeWee coach and one of the tournament organizers.

Men’s hoops to tip off soon

The local men’s basketball league will tip off Monday, Nov. 24 and organizer Ryan Anderson said new players are always welcome.

“We’re always looking for new people to come out and play,” he remarked. “We’ve had open scrimmages the last four weeks or so, and if there’s new people out there who are interested, we’ll have a sign-up on Nov. 17 at our open scrimmage [that night].”

Hamilton named top citizen

Linda Hamilton, the 21st “Citizen of the Year” for Fort Frances, formally will be honoured Nov. 21 at the town’s annual appreciation, recognition, retiree, and long-service dinner at La Place Rendez-Vous.

Town council approved the recommendation to name her as “Citizen of the Year 2009” at Monday night’s meeting.

Teen found

A young female reported missing last week has been located.

Police said Trivena Andy, 14, of Devlin was located safe and sound this morning at a youth shelter in Winnipeg.

Police are being assisted by Weechi-it-te-win Family Services for her return to Rainy River District.

Clean sweep for Eagles

The Dryden Eagles used home court and their first-round byes to full advantage Friday—sweeping all four NorWOSSA court sport crowns.

The Muskie senior and junior girls’ basketball teams trounced Kenora in the semi-finals but the long day of travel, coupled with playing against rested Eagles’ squads, cost both in the finals.
