Bearded voyageur

Liam McEvoy was dressed in his voyageur best for “Voyageur Day” activities on Friday at St. Francis School. McEvoy was getting a lesson on Métis dot art but other activities included voyageur games, jigging/square dancing, flag-making, Métis food sampling, and information on furs and trapping.

Voyageur Day

Eva Vizi poured maple syrup onto packed snow for Piper Miller and Katherine Payne to scoop up with popsicle sticks this morning as part of the Métis food sampler during “Voyageur Day” activities at St. Francis School. Other activities running all day for the students include Métis dot art, jigging/square dancing, flag-making, voyageur games, and information about furs and trapping.

Film festival

Maverick Judson starred in Andrew George's “A Good Indian," the first film shown at the Fort Frances Public Library's annual film festival. The festival, which this year is showcasing movies that speak to our area, continues tonight ("Nestor") and tomorrow ("Sleeping Giant") at 6 p.m. "Where's Barry?” was shown last night.

Ministry denies request to lower speed limit at Crossroads School

The Rainy River District School Board finally received an answer from the Ministry of Transportation regarding a speed limit change in front of Crossroads School in Devlin.

In a letter sent to the transportation minister dated Nov. 1, 2016, the board asked the ministry to reduce the speed limit on Highway 613 North from 80 km/h to 60 km/h in front of Crossroads School.

Winter carnival

J.W. Walker students engaged in a playful tug-of-war during today's winter carnival at the school. Students participated in activities that included obstacle courses, relay races, snow soccer, snowshoeing, and target practice with two large sling-shots.

Valentine goodies

Clarine Cook, left, and Pat Boustead manned the bake table at the St. John's Anglican Church Valentine Luncheon on Friday. Guests were treated to soups, sandwiches and dainties while also having the option to pick up a few baked goods for a Valentine treat.
