Football picture getting clearer

The real work began in earnest on the gridiron this week as the Muskie football team prepares to open its season next Friday (Sept. 11) on the road against the Kenora Broncos.

“We’re in much better shape than I thought we’d be,” Muskie coach Dean Bruyere said.

“We’re not going to knock down any buildings or anything, but we’re going to play ball with them,” he vowed.

Caught in rundown

Mike Wilson of the Barwick Blue Knights looked to make the tag on Sight & Sound Wolves’ player Bob Andy while Barwick’s Brad Wakefield (#7) provided back-up during the Rainy River District Fastball League final at George Oltsher Field in Barwick last Thursday evening. The game was called after six innings with the Wolves winning 9-0 to snap Barwick’s three-year reign as champs.

Stage set for Sabres' season-ticket drive

A meeting to save Junior ‘A’ hockey in Fort Frances drew more than 40 outspoken supporters at the Adventure Inn last night.

Fort Frances Jr. Sabres’ head coach Wayne Strachan and Grant Perreault, the team’s director of scouting, hosted the meeting in an attempt to parlay support for the transfer of the team from private ownership to a locally-based, not-for-profit operation.

Local champs

Falls anglers John Cann (left) and Ted Olson hoisted the trophy after capturing the fifth-annual International Falls Bass Championship on Saturday. The duo brought in a monster 16.52-pound bag while fishing on Rainy Lake on Saturday to take the title with a two-day haul of 28.10 pounds.

Oh so close

Fred Sinninghe watched his putt just sneak past the cup on the ninth green as teammates Peter Badiuk (middle) and Darryl Little kept a close eye during the second-annual Muskie Sports Association golf scramble Saturday at Kitchen Creek. The tournament saw 18 teams take part and raised just over $1,700 for high school sports programs.

Diving to base

Mike Wilson of the Barwick Blue Knights eluded the tag of Sight & Wolves’ second baseman Paul Visser while stealing second during the first inning of the Rainy River District Fastball League final at George Oltsher Field in Barwick yesterday evening.
