Candidates tackle voters’ questions

About 75 people gathered at Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton last Tuesday evening for the only local all-candidates’ debate west of Thunder Bay so far.

Hosted by the Rainy River Federation of Agriculture, the four hopefuls vying for the Thunder Bay-Rainy River seat in the Oct. 19 federal election each introduced themselves before answering questions from the audience.

DeGagne Award

Jan Anderson, representing DeGagne’s, left, and R.R. District 4-H Association president Nadine Gerula presented Ashley Croswell with the prestigious DeGagne Award for accumulating the most points in the past three years of beef club work.

Two schools land funding

Students and staff at both Rainy River High School and Atikokan High School received great news at the Rainy River District School Board’s regular meeting last Tuesday night in Rainy River.

The board approved, in principle, spending $1.5 million on renovations for the two schools.

Of that, RRHS will receive about half the funds.

Student enjoys India trip

Imagine living in Canada and having only ever visited the U.S., and then taking a trip to one of the poorest regions of India.

Neilson was one of only 25 teens selected from across Canada to participate in the Potash Corp.’s Food Security Youth trip this summer.
