The Great Bear is holding a grand re-opening today through Sunday (May 5-7). There also will be a hotdog barbecue, along with refreshments and cake, on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.

Fort High presents the musical “Mary Poppins” again tonight and tomorrow (May 5-6) at 7:30 p.m. at the Townshend Theatre (doors open at 6:30). Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students/seniors, which are available at Northwoods Gallery & Gifts and at the door.

The 10th-annual Gun & Hobby Show will take place Saturday, May 6 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Fort Frances Curling Club. There also will be a kids' area, as well as a bake sale and draws. Admission is $5.

A Mother's Day luncheon, as well as a pie and dessert sale, will be held Saturday, May 6 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at McMillan Hall (Knox United Church). Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children aged seven and up, and $2 for those six and under.

The annual spring ladies' luncheon, hosted by the Riverside Foundation for Health Care, will be held Sunday, May 7 from noon-2 p.m. in the Robert Moore School gym. This year's theme is “Birthday Bash," and the event will include a buffet lunch, dessert, a silent auction, draws, prizes, and a special "Birthday Boutique.” Tickets cost $20 each, which are available at McTaggarts and From the Grind Up, or by calling 274-4803 (reservations for tables of eight also available). All funds raised will go towards a Moleculite device.

A meeting to determine interest for a local Parkinson's support group, facilitated by Marielle Henderson of Thunder Bay, will be held Monday, May 8 at 11 a.m. at the Sister Kennedy Centre. Call 1-800-565-3000 for more details.

Town council will hold its next regular meeting Monday, May 8 at the Civic Centre. It will follow the committee of the whole meeting, which gets underway at 5:30 p.m.

The Borderland Soccer League will hold registration on Monday, May 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre. All players are asked to complete the online registration form at (women's league) or (men's league). The registration fee is $100.

The annual “Highlights Concert” for the Rainy River District Festival of the Performing Arts will be held Tuesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Townshend Theatre. Admission is $5/person. New Festival T-shirts also will be available for $15 (adult size) and $10 (youth size).

The Fort Frances Curling Club will hold its annual general meeting and election of officers there on Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. All club members are encouraged to attend.

A baby food-making workshop will be held Thursday, May 11 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Fort Frances Public Library. This free program is presented in partnership with the Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Centre. Register online at

St. Mary's Youth Groups are planning a garage sale to assist with the Discovery Camp budget and other needs. The sale will start at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 12 and continue on Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church. If you have items to donate, please drop them off there on Thursday, May 11 after 6 p.m.

The 33rd Ducks Unlimited fundraising banquet and auction will be held Friday, May 12 at the Fort Frances Curling Club. It will feature exclusive DU prints and merchandise up for bid, the “DU Firearms Frenzy,” and great prizes donated by local artists, crafters, woodworkers, and merchants. Union Duke, an extra show presented by “Tour de Fort,” will take the Townshend Theatre stage on Friday, May 12. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30. Free tipping day (for yard and garden waste only) will be held Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the local landfill.

The Fort Frances Community Garden kids' garden club will hold a kick-off on Monday, May 15 from 5-7 p.m. at the Métis Hall (714 Armit Ave.) There will be interactive booths, crafts, gardening info, sign painting, special guests, prizes, and a meal (served at 5:30 p.m.) This event is open to registered gardeners and their families. The Borderland Community Orchestra, conducted by Katherine Williams, will perform a free concert on Tuesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre. The concert is entitled “Our Favourite Playlist.”

The Mill Alumni (formerly the Oldtimers" Club) will hold its fifth-annual banquet Thursday, May 25 at the local Legion, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which cost $30 each and must be purchased by May 16, are available at the Sister Kennedy Centre and From the Grind Up. The Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association is accepting applications for coaches, convenors, and referees-in-chief, with the deadline being Friday, May 26. Applicants for all positions are asked to apply at Fort Frances Minor Hockey, Box 306, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M7.

The “Friends of the Library” will hold a book sale Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations welcome (drop books off at the library the week prior to the sale), with proceeds to benefit the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre.
