German brewers to print calorie content on beer bottles

BERLIN — Two German brewers associations are recommending that their members start printing the number of calories contained in their beers and shandies on the label.

The German Brewers Association and the Association of Private Breweries in Germany said Friday it hopes other industries, such as vintners and distillers, will follow suit.

Eggs should be limited to fewer than about four a week, the report says. Dairy foods should be about a serving a day, or less.

Nobel laureates: Despite progress, cancer won’t be wiped out

STOCKHOLM — The winners of this year’s Nobel Prize for Medicine say they expect substantial advances toward treating cancer in the next several decades, although it is unlikely the disease could be eradicated.

James Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan made the assessments at a Thursday news conference ahead of receiving the 9 million-kronor ($999,000) prize.
