Sweet number

Hue Eldridge's Grade 1/2 class performed a “Peppermint Candy Cane” dance during Robert Moore's kindergarten/primary Christmas concert on Tuesday evening. The junior/intermediate concert was yesterday evening.

French concert

Brynna, Erin, Tatum, and Amara, from Mme. Gushulak's Grade 3 French Immersion class, reminded everyone that gifts weren't the “raison pour la saison” during yesterday's rehearsal for the St. Michael's French Immersion Christmas concert. The English classes held their concert Tuesday night, with the French students performing for family and friends last night in the school's gym.

Electrical fire

The Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service was called to a house fire yesterday morning on the 1000 block of Colonization Road West. A total of 16 firefighters, along with two pumper trucks and two rescue trucks, responded to the blaze, which was deemed electrical in nature. The home experienced some damage to wiring and some smoke damage.

New business

The pine board siding of the new Westside Bait & Tackle gives the store a cabin feel, showing it is suited for those who love the outdoors. The store, co-owned by Bill Mueller and his daughter, Hannah, is now ready to serve area anglers with all types of bait, tackle, and even some apparel in stock.

Food course #1

Dishes made this semester by students in the “Food and Culture” course at Fort High have included pitas and lentil soup as a dish representative of Egypt, left, and various stir-fry noodles and pork for Japan (above).

Array of tarts

An array of 10 types of butter tarts awaited the judges of “The Best Butter Tart Bake-off" on Saturday afternoon at Betty's while "Santa Claus” made a special trip here from the North Pole to be among the celebrity judges that also included Doug Anderson, who always has wanted to judge a butter tart contest, as well as Judy Kielczewski, Will Anderson, Kim Gardiman, Linda Plumridge, and Duane Hi

Wrapping gifts

Izzy Meeks, left, and Cadance Sinclair wrapped gifts they made during “Tween Club" on Monday afternoon at the Fort Frances Public Library. The "Tween Club,” for youths aged nine-12 and running each Monday from 4-5 p.m., will resume Jan. 8.

Falls fire

Rainy Lake Oil over in International Falls was engulfed in flames Monday night. The fire was reported shortly after 7 p.m. and responded to by the Falls Fire Department, with mutual aid provided by Fort Frances and Littlefork fire departments and the Falls Airport. The fire was declared out as of 9 a.m. yesterday, and the scene turned over to the Minnesota State Fire Marshal for investigation.

Season for song

The Rainy Lake Orchestra performed for a full house Monday evening at the Fort Frances Public Library. The concert, dubbed “Holiday Melodies," featured a selection of festive numbers expertly conducted by Joe Belanger. Anna Schwartz also played several piano solos. The orchestra's Christmas concerts have become a tradition at the library—one many people look forward to.
