Wondering if my handwriting also will be remembered

The image of my grandmother is blurred in my memory. She was short, with thick glasses, and her hair was wrapped in something that resembled mosquito netting.
I don’t recall her ever smiling and certainly can’t remember a single laugh. She frightened me—not with cruelty or meanness, but with her silence.

Shedding some light on cutting boards

As part two of a series of three columns on cutting, this one will focus on cutting boards.
If you missed my previous column on knives, please e-mail me at dez@chefdez.com and I will be more than happy to send it to you. The next column will focus on cutting techniques.

Don’t hope for an epiphany—create your own

The Christian calendar marks Epiphany at Jan. 6, when the Magi visited the infant Jesus.

Safely tucked away under blanket tent

Growing up is an obligation of which I have been an unwilling participant.
Despite gritting my teeth and clinging by my fingernails to the doorframe of my childhood, life marched on and dragged me along with it.

Defensive play our chief flaw

The Christmas break is upon us and probably much-needed as we ended play with five one-goal losses, including two in overtime.
It seems as if we still have trouble in one period, and that’s our downfall right now. We dig ourselves a hole and battle to get back with shortcomings.

For centuries, ancient prophecies had circulated among the Israelite people that a Messiah, or anointed king, was to come who would bring salvation and peace to the Earth.

Lakers’ players have been busy out in the community

It has been some time since my “Coach’s Corner” column has appear in the Fort Frances Times.
Since last reporting to our local fans, we started November on a six-game winning streak, then lost two, and now have won two-straight.
It has been kind of a roller-coaster ride all month as we’ve battled in and out of first place in the SIJHL with three other teams.

Lakers snag honourable mention in top 20 ranking

This past week saw us take a hard-fought, emotional victory, beating Duluth 7-1 to start off the week.
We honoured our late assistant coach, Bob Mainville, with a brief ceremony prior to the game and the team played one of our better offensive games in recent memory.

Playing Junior ‘A’ takes dedication

Summer camp is done and now we can look forward to gearing up for the main one in August.
We had a good showing, with two teams taking part in four scrimmage sessions all last weekend at Bronco Arena over in International Falls.
We invited back 18 players to our main training camp, and offered two potential players—both defencemen—a chance to sign with the team.

Cherries a real ‘jubilee’ when they’re in season

Summer is a wonderful time of the year when it comes to the abundance of fresh fruit that is available—and cherries are one of my utmost favourite.
I believe we all have some fond memory from our childhood of eating cherries in the hot summer sun; either raw and fresh by themselves, or in a favourite family dessert.
