Trying to come down with ‘March Madness’

By Dan Falloon, sports reporter
I’ve done just about anything to try to catch a little bit of “March Madness.”
I’ve taken part in “bracketology” sessions trying to pick winning teams in the annual NCAA Div. I basketball tournament from the opening round right through to the championship final.

Jumping on the ‘Twitter’ bandwagon

By Dan Falloon, sports reporter
There’s been a lot of talk lately about “Twitter” and what role the micro-blogging service is going to play in the news media going forward.
I’ve had a personal Twitter account for about a year now, and have made a grand total of 172 “tweets.” That’s a slow day for some users.

‘Levels of Losing’ apply to Muskie setbacks

By Dan Falloon, sports reporter
It’s a good thing Duncan Keith and his Canadian teammates hung on to capture Olympic gold over the U.S. on Sunday afternoon.
If the Americans had triumphed in overtime after netting the tying goal in the final minute of the third period, it’s hard to imagine less than 85 percent of residents not calling in sick on Monday.

The Olympic ideal not such a bad idea

By Dan Falloon, Sports reporter
Criticism of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games has been around for years.
I was at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 2008 when accordion player and Vancouver native Geoff Berner played a song claiming a coroner’s office in British Columbia closed down while the government was trying to pay for the Games.

Caps’ streak should help rewrite the record books

By Dan Falloon, sports reporter
The Washington Capitals didn’t rewrite the record books with their recent 14-game winning streak, but that doesn’t mean the book of statistics shouldn’t undergo a little editing.
That’s because in the “new” NHL, which came out of the lockout year of 2004-05, all games have a winner and a loser—and so wins are a lot easier to come by.

Be No. 1 when it counts

By Dan Falloon, Sports reporter
The phrases “top team” and “championship team” often come together, like in the case of the defending World Series champion N.Y. Yankees and Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes.

Snakes on a league!

By Dan Falloon, Sports reporter
What do the Canadian Football League and the 2006 movie “Snakes on a Plane” have in common?
No, Samuel L. Jackson didn’t fly under the radar and suit up for the Las Vegas Posse in the mid-’90s.
The answer: both were improved by fan input.

Was Favre gamble worth it for Vikings?

By Dan Falloon, sports reporter

The headline on this column may be misleading.
To clear up any confusion, Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Brett Favre’s across-the-body toss that promptly was picked off by New Orleans’ Tracy Porter with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the game tied at 28-28 definitely was not worth it.

They stand on guard—in an Olympic year

Olympic hockey fans may be surprised to hear former Canadian world junior gold-medallist Hnat Domenichelli’s name come up when Canada plays Switzerland on Feb. 18.

Tough call may pay off for Lakers in the end

I don’t envy the job Fort Frances Lakers’ coach and GM Wayne Strachan had this past weekend.
Strachan pulled the trigger on a pair of deals that seem to signal a bit of a fire sale here as the team’s leading scorer, Colton Kennedy, and power-play quarterback Conner Foster were sent packing.
