Sadly, the family announces the peaceful passing of Jadwiga Chojko-Bolec, 97, with her family by her side, on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont.

Jadwiga was born in Poland on Jan. 28, 1920. After escaping Poland during World War II, she immigrated with her family to Canada in December, 1951, living for a short time in Hull, Que. and Chatham, Ont. before settling in Arbor Vitae, Ont., where she raised her family and worked hard on the farm.


It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Hilda McMahon, with her family by her side, on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.

Hilda Theresa McMahon (nee Lengyel) was born on the family farm in Stratton, Ont. on Nov. 18, 1927. Hilda (Babe) was the youngest of nine children born to Mary and John Lengyel.

As a teenager, Hilda ventured from the family farm and travelled to Oshawa, Ont. to be with two of her sisters. Many legendary stories have surfaced about her adventures during this chapter of her life.


It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Anne Lahti in the early hours of Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017 at the age of 92.

Anne (“Annie") was born in Ukraine on July 15, 1925 to Barbara (Sowchuk) and Nicolivich ("Nic”) Mutz and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1935. They settled on a farm at the end of Whitmore Road in Crozier.

After completing public school, Annie worked at various businesses in the area, including the peat moss plant, which was next to her parents' farm. She also lived in the Hamilton, Ont. area for a period of time.


It is with great sadness that the family of Merdo Krawchuk announces his passing on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

Merdo was born on Oct. 3, 1925 in Fort Frances to Mike and Mary Krawchuk. He grew up in Fort Frances, working as a log picker as a teenager before joining the military and serving overseas during W.W. II.

He served with the Lake Superior Regiment and Winnipeg Rifles in Aldershot, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, receiving the European Service Award.


With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gustave (Gus) Georges Landry on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances Ont.

Gus was born on July 26, 1926 in St. Norbert, Man., where he spent his early years. A short time after the death of his father (1937), the family moved to the Kenora, Ont. area and then, in 1979, relocated to the Fort Frances area.


It is with great sadness that the family of Merdo Krawchuk announces his passing on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

Funeral services are pending and a complete obituary will follow.


George Walter Easton passed away suddenly on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017 at the Didsbury Hospital in Didsbury, Alta.

George was born on July 25, 1938 in Fort Frances, Ont.

He spent more than 22 years serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. After retiring from the army, he worked at the Didsbury Hospital maintenance department for 11 years.

George leaves behind his wife, Ruby; sons, George (Cindy) and Scott (Miriam); grandchildren, Brandon, Jesse, Collin (Christine), and Rosilyn (Taylor); as well as two brothers, Don and Jim.


It is with great sorrow that the family of Evie Eldridge (Dick) announces her peaceful passing, at the age of 91, on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 at her home at Rivers Edge Villa in International Falls, Mn.

Mom was born on Nov. 16, 1925 in Fort Frances, Ont. to the late Helen and John Dick.

After graduating from Fort Frances High School, she married Edmund Robert Eldridge on Dec. 15 1946 and then moved to Nova Scotia, where Ed served 20 years in the navy.

Patricia Ruth Del Ben

announces her passing on Friday October 20, 2017 at the LaVerendrye Hospital.

She leaves behind her sister Grace and husband Merdo Krawchuk; niece Patti (Brad) Anderson and their children Graham and Rachel and niece Julie Krawchuk and husband Hugh Ralph and stepson Jon Del Ben.

Patricia was predeceased by her parents John and Clara McCutchon; husband Geno Del Ben; brothers Robert, Jack, Ken and Donald McCutchon.


Elisabeth Holborn, 102, of Dance Township, Ont. passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

Elisabeth was born on June 17, 1915 in Sprucedale, Ont. to George and Rose Marshall, one of 10 children.

She met and married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Holborn, in 1938 and together they raised their two children, Robert Jr. and Margaret.

Elisabeth was a wonderful housewife and caregiver. In her younger years, she loved to garden and flowers brought her great joy.


Under the loving and compassionate care of her daughter, Breanna, in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., Tammy Lynn Dubord (nee Howells) succumbed to her five-month battle with small cell lung cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017.

Born in Fort Frances, Ont. on Aug. 8, 1967 to Donna Marie (Mills) and George Alvin Howells, she lived there until 2001, when she and her family moved to Quebec.

Tammy married André Edward Dubord on Nov. 7, 1986 in Fort Frances. They had Breanna Pascale (Oct. 4, 1986) and Chantal Rose-Aline (March 31, 1991) in Fort Frances.


Surrounded by his family, Daniel Joseph Belluz passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017.

He was born on Aug. 23, 1942 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Daniel and Dora Belluz (Yurchuk).

From a young age, it was evident Danny was an over-achiever when he began a paper route. Each week after collecting and receiving his pay, he would go to the store, buy a comic book, his much-loved candy, and pop, then proceed to go to the theatre and watch a movie or two; what he referred to as a double feature.


Henri passed away peacefully, at the age of 51, on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

She will be deeply missed by her sister and brother-in-law, Monique and Neil Ibey.

She was predeceased by her parents, Nick and Thea Verhoef.

Henri was born in Peterborough, Ont., grew up in Campbellford, Ont., and moved to Fort Frances in 1997.

She was an Ontario Land Surveyor and a Canada Lands Surveyor, and managed the survey offices in Dryden and Fort Frances.


Henriette (Henri) Jocelyn Verhoef passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at the age of 51, at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

A celebration of life will take place Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, with Pastor Ralph Fluit officiating.

Visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m.

DARREN LEE OTTERTAIL (Ogiimaa-Waaiitung) (Waasii)

It is with great sorrow that the family of Darren Ottertail announces his sudden passing on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 in Kenora, Ont.

Darren was born on Dec. 22, 1970 in Lac La Croix First Nation, Ont. to Ralph Sr. and Joan Ottertail. He was raised in Lac La Croix First Nation, graduating from high school there.

Darren loved art and was an incredible artist. He also took a course to learn to hunt and guide; he was very proud that on his first trip, they caught a large moose.

Darren always was willing to lend a hand, especially to his parents.


With great sorrow, the family of Sarah Victoria “Vicky” Anderson (Fults) announces her passing, at the age of 75, on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay, On.

Vicky was born on March 11, 1942 to Bert and Mabel Fults (Moore) of Miscampbell where she attended school and spent most of her childhood with her siblings on the family farm.

She was the youngest daughter and older sister of one brother of 12 siblings in total.


Lydia Esther Wilson was born on March 30, 1936 in Carpenter Township, at her grandfather's house, in the same room her father was born in, and was delivered by her grandmother.

Lydia passed away on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. after suffering a stroke a few weeks ago.

Lydia was raised on the farm in Dobie Township and went to the one-room school there, finishing her education at Barwick Consolidated.


Ed Dutka, 83, of Atikokan, Ont., passed away on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017 in Thunder Bay, Ont.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017 at noon at the Riverview Cemetery in Atikokan.

JESSICA MARGARET (JESSIE) FRIDAY (Giiwaybiik gii-ishinikazoo gaye) (Ozhaawashkwaabinesiik) (Wazhushk gii-odoodemaan)

It is with great sadness that the family of Jessica Margaret “Jessie” Friday announces her passing on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances. Ont.

Jessie was born at Namakan Lake, Ont. to John and Mary Swanson. She lived in Seine River First Nation, Ont. all her life, only moving to Rainycrest when her health would not allow her to stay home.

She was united in marriage to Boudreau Friday and together they raised 10 children. Jessie loved family and was very involved in their lives.


Roland Vernon Hill was born on April 28, 1929 in the village of Loose, Kent County, England.

He came to Canada in September, 1966 with his wife, Julia, three daughters, Rebecca, Rachel, and Ruth, and their dog, McGregor.

Roland and his family moved to Northeastern Ontario in 1967, then moved to Moose Crossing Farm in 1969. Thus began a career that lasted a span of 30 years, as a bait and tackle shop owner, hunting and fishing guide, fur trapper, prospector, farmer, vegetable grower (especially his potatoes and turnips), and, for a short spell, a school bus driver.


Annabelle Hawk, beloved wife of late Terry Godin, passed away peacefully at the age of 71, with her family by her side, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances.

She is survived by her son, Kevin Godin (Kristi Medicine); sisters, Annie Hawk and Lucy Copenace (late Henry Copenace); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Annabelle was born on Jan. 1, 1946 in Rainy River First Nations.

A wake was held Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 at the Rainy River First Nations gymnasium beginning at 4 p.m.


It is with great sadness that the family of Kimberly Lorraine Clendenning (Belluz) announces her unexpected passing on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017.

Kim was born on April 9, 1973 in Thunder Bay, Ont., then moved to the family farm in La Vallee, Ont., where she spent the majority of her childhood. A true city girl from the country.


With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Laurent (Larry) Smits, 87, on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 in Edmonton, Alta.

He was born on Jan. 15, 1930.

Larry was pre-deceased by his wife, Doris (Hansen); parents, Harry and Anna; brother, Harry; sister, Jeanne Belanger; brothers-in-law, Vic Belanger and Ike Balcewich; sister-in-law, Lorraine; and daughter-in-law, Shirley.


Sharon Alexandra Yurkiw passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer, at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont..

She was born on Aug. 1, 1950 in Rosevalley, Sask. to Pearl and Maurice Yurkiw.

Sharon was an avid reader, and loved crosswords and doing puzzles.

Sharon is survived by her brother, Brian (Linda) Yurkiw and their children, Jeff and Brad; and sister, Barbara (David) Moon and their son, Joshua.

She was predeceased by her father, Maurice, and mother, Pearl.
