LAURIE NORRIS

Laurie Jimmy Norris, 69, passed on peacefully to everlasting life on Monday, Feb. 26, 2018.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Couchiching, Ont.

WILLIAM RENZO LONEY

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of William “Bill” Renzo Loney, 77, of Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., formerly of Emo, Ont., on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

Bill was born on Jan. 14, 1941 in Emo to Lawrence and Grace (Strachan). He was united in marriage to Julie (Cayer) on June 6, 1964.

Bill attended school in Emo and then Fort Frances High School. He started working for his dad at the Cloverleaf Store at a young age, delivering groceries on his bike until he could drive.

SHIRLEY ELIZABETH HALVERSON

It is with great sorrow that the family of Shirley Elizabeth Halverson announces her passing on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

She was born on Dec. 25, 1929 to William and Minnie McDonald at the family farm in Sleeman, Ont. Her Grandma Olson was the midwife.

She was married to Leo Roland Halverson on July 24, 1948 and they settled in Rainy River, Ont. while Leo worked for the CNR.

She is survived by her sisters, Bette Lee and Deb Liedtke; her children, Eugene (Joanne) Schmidt, Cindy (Robert) Kuhlman, Pamela (Rudolf Prokesh) Schmidt, and Randy (Tania) Schmidt; grandchildren, Chris Schmidt, Autym Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Jesse Schmidt, Nick Hearn, Candance Hearn, Jayden Cabral, Mykenna Cabral, Randee Schmidt, Rianna Schmidt, Chelsey Prokesch, and Justin Prokesch; and great-grandchildren, Dalton Stone, Kelsey Gushue-Schmidt, Logan Stone, Trinity Schmidt-Stone, Rory Gushue-Schmidt, Emily Gushue-Schmidt, Noah Bauldic, and Tatum Schmidt.

Theresa Dirk passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

A come-and-go tea will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 in Fort Frances.

Jack Hogan, 77, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.

RUDOLPH QUINN WHITECROW (Zhooniyaagaaboo) (Namaa Clan)

Rudy Whitecrow, 45, of Seine River First Nation, Ont., passed away surrounded by family on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018 in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Rudy was born on Dec. 8, 1972 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Andrew Morrison Jr. and Cecilia Whitecrow.

After their passing in 1974, he was raised by his aunt, Doris Willie.

He worked for various companies doing highway construction, welding, roofing, and carpentry. He enjoyed fishing and attending pow-wows.

MARY JOHNSON

On Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 at 7 p.m., our mom and gramma, Mary Johnson, passed away.

We are sad that she is gone but happy that she is now free of pain and reunited with her wonderful husband-our dad, and grampa, Eddy. She passed quickly and peacefully, just after smiling brightly at two of her children who were at her side.

DENNIS WILLIAM HYATT

Sadly, the family announces the passing of Dennis Hyatt, 78, on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. with his family by his side.

Dennis was born on July 29, 1939 to Jack and Illo Hyatt. He worked for many years at the Fort Frances paper mill.

In 1987, Dennis and his wife, Lee, partnered with Delbert and Nonie Barker and built and operated the Circle D Restaurant in Emo, Ont.

Harvey Larson passed away suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at home in Atikokan, Ont.

He was predeceased by wife, Senja (Nurmi) Larson in 2014; parents, Walter and Elfva Larson; and grandson, Ian Larson.

Family members left to mourn are his sons, Maurits Larson (Kathy) and Randy Larson (Teresa); daughter, Karen Loewen (Charles); four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Larson (Dora); sister, Marianne Sundin (Lawrie); sister-in-law, Laila Lee; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

GEORGE WILLIAM BARRETT

It is with great sadness that the family of George William Barrett announces his passing on Wednesday Feb. 7, 2018 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont.

George was born on April 5, 1936 in Fort Frances to Frederick and Isabelle Barrett.

He lived in the Rainy River District all his life, working in the bush with various businesses across the district. He enjoyed fishing, trapping minnows, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He also always was up for a good argument.

MARIA (MARY) LINDHOLM

With family by her side, Mary Lindholm (nee Sloboda) passed away peacefully, at the age of 97, on Monday, Feb. 5, 2017 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.

She was gracious, kind, and loving, and will be dearly missed by those who knew her.

Mary was born on June 26, 1920 in Fort Frances to Wasyl (Bill) and Anna Sloboda. She was the second-eldest of five children.

KATHERINE (YORK) BURNS

Now I have been layed under the ground,

Suffered and died for me.

Katherine (York) Burns passed away on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018.

She was born on March 16, 1953.

Katherine was predeceased by her father, Jim York.

She is mourned by her loving, supportive family: her mother, Velaire York; brothers, Peter and Linda, Bill and Rose, and Robert and Corinne; and sister, Julie and Ron Halverson.

Mary Lindholm, 97, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.

VIVIAN NEILSON

With loved ones at her side, Vivian Ione Neilson passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont.; united at last with those she missed so deeply.

Vivian was born on April 4, 1928 on the northeast corner of Sifton Township, at the homestead of her parents, Leroy and Amanda Berg.

She grew up helping on the farm, hunting for food and cooking it for the hired help—honing skills that would carry her through her working life.

GORDON M. ('CHIPS') CALDER

Sen. Gord “Chips” Calder, 84 years young, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018 with his family by his side.

Born in 1933, Gord was a passionate man who enjoyed life to the fullest, especially when it came to hockey, family, and learning more of his Métis heritage—not necessarily in that order!

Gord was also one of the founders of the Sunset Country Métis, which started in Fort Frances back in 1994. He also was very active in darts and, of course, horseshoes! He always was trying to get everyone involved in a quick game of horseshoes!

RUBY GALLAGHER

Ruby Gallagher passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont after struggling for many years with Alzheimer's.

She was born in Emo, Ont. on May 4, 1926 to Annie VanDrunen. Her father, Anton, had passed before her birth.

Ruby's older brother, Hank, was the man of the house while she was growing up. They lived through very lean times; she learned the value of hard work and wasting very little—virtues that came to shape the woman she was throughout her whole life.
