Walter O. Melynchuk, 80, of New Hope, Mn., passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2017 after a short battle with cancer.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary; and parents, Edith and Steven.
Walter is survived by his children, Joanna (Bill) Rooney, Sandy (Joe) Girod, and Susie Melynchuk (Dave Larson); grandchildren, Kendra, Trey, Ahna, Maria, Julia, Payton, and Henrik.
Also surviving are his brother, Gerald (Kathleen); sisters, Suzanne (Tim) Forsythe and Stephanie (Glenn) Theis; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Walter played hockey at UMD, was a referee in both high school and college hockey, and elected into the Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame in Fort Frances, Ont.
He also was an excellent amateur tennis player, and a long-time food vendor (Delicious Potato Skins) at the Minnesota State Fair.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at 10:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at the Glen Haven Chapel (5125 W. Broadway in Crystal, Mn.)
Walter will be interred with his wife in Winona, Mn.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriams preferred to the University of Minnesota Baseline Club.
