It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Big George announces his passing on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Tom was born on July 11, 1960 to Joe and Janet Big George.
In the 1990s, he worked as a community counsellor and as a native language teacher for Anishanabee Counselling Services. He enjoyed traditional activities like ricing, fishing, and pow-wows, and also enjoyed hockey, baseball, and music.
He adored his grandchildren and loved spending time with him.
Tom is survived by his mother, Janet Big George (Bruyere); son, Adrian (Eileen) Indian; daughter, Kylie Big George; and grandchildren, Adrian Indian Jr. Ariana Indian, Alayla Paypompee, Lavina Oyemu, Kanise Oyemu, and Andrew Oyemu.
Also surviving are his siblings, Virginia Big George (Jimmy Spruce), Harold Big George (Louella Bruyere), Verna McDonald, John Big George (Debbie Baskatawang), and Norman Bruyere (Alda Ruby); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Joe Big George; partner, Linda Indian; brothers, William (Billy) Big George, Clarence Big George, and Daniel Big George; and nephew, Nathan McDonald.
A traditional wake will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 from 3 p.m. at the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation gymnasium.
A traditional ceremony will follow on the morning of Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, with Elder Lawrence Henry officiating.
The pallbearers will be Joey McDonald, Kevin Jack, Adrian Indian, and Skylar Jack.
