It is with great sadness that the family of Susan Crystal Gayle Stafford announces her passing on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018 at the Riverside Health Care centre surrounded by her family.
Susie was born on May 23, 1978 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. to Carolyn and Calvin Stafford and spent her childhood happily on the farm north of Stratton. Growing up, she enjoyed spending time with many relatives and friends, playing with all the animals, helping with chores, and especially taking the cattle to the fair every summer.
Susie attended Sturgeon Creek School and then Rainy River High School before various careers led her to the role of pharmacy assistant, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Always filled with compassion, her high level of professionalism and care was recognized and celebrated consistently by both clients and co-workers.
Many years ago, Susie battled with ulcerative colitis, followed by her first occurrence of melanoma cancer. After five years in remission, Susie and Mike Hanson were blessed with their son, Max.
Susie and Max made many special memories together that included Lakers' games, exploring at the cabin and her parents' farm, and the Emo Fall Fair, just to name a few. A proud hockey mom and incredible enthusiast towards anything that he was passionate about, Max was very well-known to be the source of Susie's greatest joy.
Because of her own extensive experience with cancer, Susie became very passionate in support of the “Relay for Life." She helped form a team (the "Cancer Cougars”) with other cancer survivor families and together they raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.
Susie always was humble and extremely grateful for the amazing support she received from everyone towards her fundraisers and also her personal health journey.
With an infectious energy and always a warm smile, each day of her life Susie brought all that knew her so much light. She taught us to live in the moment, love your family, and laugh as much as you can. We will never forget.
Susie is survived by her son, Maxten Hanson; partner, Mike Hanson; parents, Calvin and Carolyn Stafford; sisters, Angela (Neil Haw) and Sherri Marienhoff; and nieces and nephews, Travis, Scotlynn, Hayden, and Carenna Haw, and Harley and Odin Marienhoff.
She also is survived by her aunts and uncles, Leonard (Dora Mae) Stafford, Norman (Hellen) Stafford and Glenn (Dianne) Stafford, Rosemary (Garry) Tetu, Sandy (Andre) Albert, Shelley (Chris McCormick) Selman, and Carmen (Lulys) Selman; and numerous cousins.
She was predeceased by her grandparents, Clara (Ward) and William Stafford and Sylvia (Archutick) and Leonard Selman; and aunts and uncles, Ruby and Allan Dalberg and Alma and Frank Korb.
A service of celebration will be held on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont.
If desired, in memoriam donations may be made to the Tamarack House and Fort Frances Community Chest c/o Northridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 89, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.
