SIPKA ‘SAM’ HELDER

Sipka “Sam” Helder, 67, of Bergland, Ont., passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 1998 at Rainy River Hospital in Rainy River, Ont.

He was born Sept. 29, 1930 in McCrosson Township, Ont. to the late Sjoerd and Sytske Helder. Raised in Rainy River District, he began working in construction and building homes, which he did most of his life.

Sam also lived three years in Buffalo prior to his marriage to Margareth Osinga on May 3, 1958. Together they settled in Minneapolis, Mn. for four years before moving to Waterloo, Ont. in 1963.

In 1975, the family moved back to Bergland, where he worked as superintendent of Lake of the Woods Park until his retirement in 1995.

Sam enjoyed hunting, walking, boating, birds, gardening, and especially his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Yan in Holland, and John; and one sister, Grace Froome.

Sam is survived by his wife, Margaret Helder, of Bergland; four children, Debra and husband, Mark Gustafson, of Vancouver, B.C., and Josh Helder and wife, Bev, Peggy and husband, Glenn Anderson, and Kimberly Helder and Robert Smith, all of Bergland; and 10 grandchildren, Nici, Sami, Kody, Tara, Bryan, Chad, Meagan, Daniel, Corey, and Brody.

He also is survived by two brothers, Gerben Helder, and Ulke Helder and wife, Hannah, all of Bergland; four sisters, Jane VanderLee of Brandon, Man., Verna and husband, Chris MeulenKamp, of Transcona, Man., Tina and husband, Ted Lundgren, of Bergland, and Rena and husband, Sjoerd Helder, of Holland; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 7, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bergland. Carolyn Kreger officiated, with interment in Bergland.
