With great sadness the family announces the passing of Ruth Mclean, 86, from Harris Hill on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 peacefully at the Emo Hospital.
Ruth was born on July 29, 1932 to Sophie (nee Priesentanz) and William Schettler in Tupper Township, Man. She was the fourth of five children, with her siblings being Arnold, Violet, Helen and Walter.
She spent her early years, raised on a farm North of Plumas, Man. She attended the nearby one-room Maitland School until Grade 8.
She enjoyed being on the farm working alongside her family, they raised cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, geese, and also harvested grain.
She was athletic as a young girl and loved playing baseball with her sister Helen; they were just as good or better at it than many of the boys.
Ruth later moved to Winnipeg in her early 20s and worked at the Creamette pasta factory and then at Parkhill Furniture factory in Winnipeg. She met the love of her life, Ross McLean, and later united in marriage and moved to Harris Hill where they raised their family of three girls and worked together on the farm.
She looked after everything at home while Ross and her brother-in-law, Ken, were away fishing on the lake. This included milking the cow and many other daily tasks, but always with no complaint and a smile on her face.
Ruth was a caring, kind and hard-working person. There were never many idle moments for Ruth.
She was always busy doing something—working in her huge garden, canning, cleaning, cooking, baking and making sure everybody else was cared for.
Ruth was a caregiver by nature and cared for many of her elderly family members throughout her life: her mother-in-law, Sarah; mother, Sophie; and later her brother-in-law, Ken, and then her husband, Ross.
She liked to visit and always had to make sure everyone was fed with either cake, cookies, tea etc.
Mom always had a ready smile for everyone and enjoyed seeing the grandchildren when they came to visit. She will be missed but forever in our hearts with many fond and happy memories.
Ruth is predeceased by her parents, Sophie and William; her husband, Ross; brother, Arnold Schettler, and his wife, Mae; brother, Walter Schettler; brothers-in laws, Gordon Anderson, Hubert McLean, Ken McLean, and Jim McLean and his wife, Ellen; sisters-in-law,, Violet Nicholas and her husband, John, and Annabelle Kreger and her husband, Albert.
Ruth is survived by her three girls, Brenda (Greg) Sitarz. Shirley McLean, and Laurie (Troy) Brown; grandchildren, Adam (Kyla) MacKay, Andrew (Chelsea) MacKay, Madison, Katelyn, and Wyatt Brown; and great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Lincoln and Avery MacKay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends were received for visitation at Northridge Funeral Home in Emo on Monday, May 13, 2019 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
