Sadly, the family announces the sudden passing of Ronald Phillips Grout, 83, of Morson, Ont., on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 while visiting family in Texas.

Ron was born on Jan. 24, 1934 in Staten Island, New York City, New York to Stanley and Mary Grout.

In 1947, the Grout family left New York to move to Riverside, Calif. There he met Clara Lucille (Lucy) Speas in 1954 when she moved to California from Kalona, Iowa. They were united in marriage on Aug. 21, 1955 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Riverside.

Ron received his BA from UC Riverside. He later received his Master of Divinity from the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, Calif. on May 10, 1962. Ron was ordained as a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Riverside on May 27, 1962.

Ron's first parish was in Lundar, Man. from 1962-66. He then accepted a call from Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances, Ont. and the family moved there in January, 1966.

He served the Zion congregation for 12 years. In that time, they bought land and built a cabin on Rainy Lake, where the family spent many memorable summers (and winter visits, too).

In January, 1978, Ron accepted a call from the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Winnipeg, Man. He served this congregation until the summer of 1985, when he was called to serve at the Bethseda Lutheran Church in Kenora, Ont.

In 1997, Ron retired and they made their home in Morson, where they lived until his passing. During Ron and Lucy's retirement, they remained very active in the church, attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Bergland, Ont.

Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lucy; children, Gregory (Penny) Grout of Boyd, Tex., Ralph (Colleen) Grout of Winnipeg, Man., Kathleen (Rockford) Moen of Morson, Ont., and Ruth Kerner of Argyle, Tex.

He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Jasmine, Curtis, Cory, Ashley, Anders, Kristin, Jessica, Jacquelyn, and Jennifer; and his 12 great-grandchildren.

Ron also is survived by his brother, John (Jack) Grout of Riverside, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Stan and Mary Grout; and sister, Shirley Grout.

A service of celebration and remembrance will be held Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bergland.

Interment will follow in the Morson Cemetery.

If desired, in memoriam donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Berlgand c/o Northridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 89, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.
