MYTRO 'SVET' WOWCHUK

It is with great sadness we mourn the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Mytro “Svet” Wowchuk, who passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, Jan. 3rd, 2018 at the age of 85.

He was born in Gardenton, Man. on March 30, 1932 to Andrew and Rose Wowchuk (nee Kawulia). The family moved to Fort Frances, Ont. when Svet was a young boy and he remained here throughout his life.

Svet was united in marriage to Carol Williams on May 1, 1970. Together, they raised their family in Fort Frances, spending their time between town and their cabin at Bear Passage.

Svet was a tremendously hard-working man. He held various jobs throughout his life before eventually settling in as the manager of the Fort Frances Memorial Arena in 1964. There, he developed a reputation for being a tough but kind character where his “bark was worse than his bite.”

He often could be heard humming or singing a tune while working. His ice surfaces were impeccable and his children always were proud to have the “Zamboni man” as their father!

He retired in 1996 after 32 years of service to the town and was able to concentrate on his love of outdoor landscaping, as well as taking up curling and billiards.

He spent hours tending to his gardens at Bears Pass and in town, making them beautiful for his wife, Carol, and family to enjoy. Mowing the lawn and shovelling the snow were activities he enjoyed immensely—always generously helping his children and others with these.

Once his grandchildren came along, Svet took to the grandparenting role with a flourish—dividing his time between Mississauga and Fort Frances, where he spoiled them with love and ice cream treats.

He shared his love of country western music and long car rides, where he taught them silly songs they always will remember.

Svet was predeceased by his wife, Carol; parents, Andrew and Rose Wowchuk; son, Scott Skifstrom; brother, William Wowchuk; sister, Helen Fylkow; and niece, Patricia Johnson.

He is survived by his children, Gerry Stratton (Alma), Sue-Ann Rudaitis (Algis), Tara Tolley (Brian), and Randy Skifstrom.

He also is survived by his brother, Walter Wowchuk; brother-in-law, Peter Fylkow; sister-in-law, Susan Flint; and grandchildren, Lukas, Darius, and Jonas Rudaitis, Carol and Erin Tolley, Nikki Skifstrom, Colin Angus, Tania Cox, Nikki Hughes, and Cori Olender.

As per his wishes, a funeral will not be held. A private celebration of life will be held for family.

In lieu of flowers, please make an in memoriam donation to KidSport or Rainycrest Long-Term Care c/o Green Funeral Home, P.O. Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
