Melvina Blackburde, 62, of Manitou Rapids, Ont. passed away at McKellar Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont. on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998.
She was born Dec. 21, 1935 in Manitou Rapids, Ont. to the late Gilbert and Charlotte Blackburde.
Melvina had lived all of her life at Manitou. Throughout the years, she had driven bus for Manitou Rapids, owned and operated along with her husband Allan “Al’s Taxi,” and had worked at Gill’s store, and the peat moss plant in Barwick, Ont. Melvina enjoyed doing various crafts including crocheting, knitting and sewing. She also loved playing bingo, reading, and being around children—especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son Bradley, one sister Virginia Kelly, and by one niece Janice Kelly.
Melvina is survived by her husband Allan Peterson of Manitou Rapids First Nation, Ont.; five children Deanna Stus of Manitou Rapids First Nation, Ont., Derek Peterson of Calgary, Alta., Dwayne Blackburde of Emo, Ont., Florabelle and husband Randy Both of Barwick, Ont., and Leann Beel and Kyle Frederickson of Winnipeg, Man.; nine grandchildren Bradley Both, Darlene and husband Archie McKay, Sherri and Dave McKelvie, Sky, Samantha, Chad and Kevin Blackburde, and Kyle and Krystal Beel; three great-grandchildren Larissa and Raylene McKelvie, and Shayne McKay; one sister Teresa Perrault of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998 at 2 p.m. at Manitou Rapids Gymnasium in Manitou Rapids, Ont. Father James Panikulam officiated with interment in Manitou Rapids Rainy River First Nation Cemetery. Visitation was held prior to funeral services on Tuesday afternoon at Manitou Rapids.
Pallbearers were Mervin Hyatt, Ron McQuaker, Peter Borger, Marvis Darrah, Terry Godin and Tom Nugent.
