It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Martha Blight, Tabasibii'anook, Kinew dodem.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Jerry Blight, of Rainy River; son, Brad Kirkrude, of Anishinaabe of Naongashiing; daughter, Terri Andy; and siblings, Bella Andy, Lorraine Gibbons (Clarence), Louis Kirkrude (Lollie), George Kirkrude, and Georgina Kirkrude.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jenna, Trivina, Daniel, Tamika, Danier, and Niibin; great-grandchildren, Avalee, Alayah, Bradley, Melena, Jade, Ameriah, Joy and Juliet; stepdaughters, Shannon (Roger) and Susan (Craig); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins,and close friends.
She was predeceased by her son, Randy; parents, George Kirkrude and Ruth Kirkrude (George); siblings, Agnes and Brian; and her beloved grandson, Junior (Bradley Kirkrude Jr.).
Martha was born on one of the islands of Lake of the Woods and spent her childhood on the lake with her family.
She worked at several tourist camps as a cleaner and cook. She then went into commercial fishing with her family and had many loyal customers within the Rainy River District.
Martha was a loving grandmother, auntie, friend and wife. She was a very friendly person and enjoyed visiting on the phone and in person.
She could be anywhere and she would make new friends. Her laughter was contagious. She enjoyed sewing, making cloth rugs, travelling and representing her community as an elder.
She was very knowledgeable of the old ways and she spoke the old Ojibwe language. She loved to dance at pow-wows.
A traditional wake was held at the Big Grassy Hall beginning Monday, May 27, 2019 at 4 p.m.
A traditional funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Big Grassy Hall with Elder Ken Kakeeway officiating.
Burial to take place at the Morson Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Phillip Andy, Sean Comegan, Ryan Kirkrude, Julian Kirkrude, Johnny Kirkrude, and George Kirkrude.
