Marie Emilia DeGagné, 84, of 425 Nelson St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998 at the Nipawin Union Hospital in Nipawin, Sask.
Emilia was born Jan. 17, 1914 in Richer, Man. to the late Peter and Harriet Lecerc. She was united in marriage to Ulysses in 1934, and they farmed together in Devlin from 1938 to 1970.
Emilia was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League. She also was a member of the Canadian Diabetes Association and she had a love for knitting and playing cards.
She was a real family person, and her family was very important to her.
Emilia was predeceased by her husband, Ulysses, on Feb. 26, 1970. She also was predeceased by five sisters; three brothers; one daughter-in-law, Susan, on April 30, 1990; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
She is survived by eight sons, Roger and wife, Doris, of Atikokan, Vinton and wife, Arlene, of Fort Frances, Paul and wife, Jan, of Red Deer, Alta., Raymond of Fort Frances, Ed and wife, Karen, of Golden, B.C., Gerard and wife, Betty, of Red Deer, Alta., Leo and wife, Janis, of Thunder Bay, and Marcel and wife, Valdean, of Emo; and four daughters, Aurise, and husband, Armand Manaigre, of Thompson, Man., Louise and husband, Roy Cull, of St. John’s Nfld., Emily and husband, Bob Bishop, of Bury, Que., and Yvonne and husband Richard Smelt, of Aylsham, Sask.
Also surviving are 36 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. Fr. Ed. Kosa O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Friends visited Monday evening, Sept. 28, 1998 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. Prayers were held at 7:30 p.m.
Pallbearers were Kevin DeGagné, Murray DeGagné, Brian DeGagné, Barry DeGagné, Greg DeGagné, and Tim DeGagné. Honourary pallbearers were Cathy Ducharme, Amanda, Nickel, Jody DeGagné, Curtis DeGagné, Darren DeGagné, and Claire Perry.
Grandma’s eulogy was done by her granddaughters, Kim Cross and Barb Denniss. Readings were read by granddaughters, Pamela Smerchinski and Doriane Lind. Great-grandson Nathan DeGagné served as alter boy.
Granddaughter Chantelle Lind sang “Amazing Grace” for her grandmother. Rita Moorhouse sang “Ave Maria” while Victor Armit and Wanda Botsford supplied the rest of the beautiful music.
Emilia’s niece, Agnés M. Rémellard, helped to serve communion. Orielle DeGagné, and Leo Tremblay and Cecil Duffy helped with the service.
